The RPM Rangers were powered by a "universal bio-electric field" said to connect "the life force of all living things" [1]. This field was commonly referred to as "the bio-field" [2]; other terms included "bio-energy field" and "energy bio-field" [3].

Q&A

Were they actually called "RPM Rangers" in-show?

Yes, in the Samurai teamup [1]. In their own season, the team also occasionally used a group call of "Power Rangers RPM!" (though only while inside their Zords) [2]. More commonly, however, the team was known as the "Power Rangers" or simply "Rangers" [3].

[2] Handshake, Ranger Red, Three's a Crowd, Beyond a Doubt
[3] The Road to Corinth, et al.

If the main five Rangers were 1–5 and Gem and Gemma were 7 and 8, who was number 6?

(Croc Carrier)

Were the various Morphers named in-show?

...

What did "RPM" stand for?

It wasn't specified in-show, but merchandise such as toys and DVDs used the phrase "Racing Performance Machines."

How much functionality did the Cell Shift Morphers share with early 21st century cell phones?

...

How did the RPM Rangers initiate their morphs?

The Rangers loaded their engine cells into their respective Morphers and then readied the Morphers with a call of, "RPM, get in gear!" [1].
[1] ?

What happened when the Rangers morphed?

Dillon morphing (click above for more images)
Dillon morphing (click above for more images)
First let's address what appeared to happen in the stock morph sequences [1]:
  • The Rangers' emblem flew out of the Morpher's display (Gold and Silver's emblem had added wing designs; click here for images).
  • The Ranger appeared to slide through a futuristic race track (exception: Gold and Silver flew upward instead), passing through schematics pertaining to that Ranger's weapons and accessories (with Green and Black doing a backflip along the way; click here for images); meanwhile, his/her clothes were replaced with a white glow.
  • The Ranger spun around on his/her feet, the white glow turning into his/her Ranger suit, sans helmet (exception: Gold and Silver simply continued to fly as they received their suits).
  • The Ranger held out his/her arms, and two shoulder straps extended from behind his/her back and connected to his/her belt buckle (exception: Gold and Silver had four straps which connected to their chest emblems instead).
  • An image of the Ranger's Zord flew up behind him/her and turned into his/her helmet, which then attached; the visor formed last.
  • The Ranger then posed in front of the Ranger emblem (Gold and Silver still with wing designs) as an explosion erupted behind that.
[1] ?, ?, ?

So how much of that "really" happened?

It's hard to say, but note the following:
  • The morph sequences didn't always match the Rangers' actual wardrobes and hairstyles [1].
  • In some instances, there didn't appear to be ample room for the skids and leaps depicted in the morph sequences [2].
  • The Rangers sometimes "insta-morphed," wherein a simple colored gleam took the place of a full morph sequence (see "Morpher uses" table below).
[1] ?
[2] ?

Was the "bio-field" just another name for the Morphing Grid?

The term "Morphing Grid" was never used in RPM. The bio-field's description as an "unseen energy grid that connects the life force of all living things" [1] might or might not aptly describe the Morphing Grid; see its page for more details.
[1] Rain

What else do we know about this "bio-field?"

According to Dr. K, manipulating this "universal bio-electric field" allowed for "unimagined advances in technology," including the Rangers' suits [1]. Further:
  • Dr. K noted that each Ranger color was designed to "configure the movement of electrons within the energy bio-field" to "bend time and space" in a unique way (thus explaining the Rangers' individual powers) [2].
  • The Rangers initially had difficulty forming the SkyRev Megazord when their lack of cooperation prevented "the bio-fields" from synchronizing [3].
  • The Paleozord was uncontrollable for a time due to a lack of "proper synchronicity with the bio-field," as it was "based on extinct life-forms" [4].
  • After downloading the "bio-field matrix" (as Dr. K described it), Venjix was able to access the bio-field, enabling him to "delete" a number of Zords, as well as Gem and Gemma (but Dr. K later restored the twins) [5].

[3] Three's a Crowd

[5] Danger and Destiny

How did the bio-field allow Venjix to just "delete" things in the physical world?

It wasn't explained expressly, but it could be noted that the Rangers themselves were able to "bend space and time" via the bio-field [1].
[1] Go for the Green

So the bio-field let Venjix just disintegrate anything he wanted?

Er, well, he only succeeded in deleting Zords and Gem and Gemma, and the latter two were said to have been deleted due to their molecular structure being aligned with the bio-field (that is to say, they were morphed at the time) [1]. However, around this time, General Kilobyte also used a terminal to delete Tenaya's blaster [1], and Dr. K's virus later caused the Grinders to vanish [2], all with identical effects.
[1] Danger and Destiny, part 1
[2] Danger and Destiny, part 2

Uhhh, were Tenaya's blaster and the Grinders aligned with the bio-field at the time?

Not in such a way that was revealed in-show, no.

How did Dr. K restore Gem and Gemma after they were deleted?

Unspecified, except that Dr. K apparently had access to the bio-field via her viral intrusion into Venjix's systems [1]. Further, Gem and Gemma explained to their awestruck teammates: "That's the bio-field for you. Can't create it, can't destroy it" [1].
[1] Danger and Destiny, part 2

"Can't create it, can't destroy it?" What does that even mean?

Dunno.

Um, but does that mean that anything deleted in the finale could be undeleted?

Unspecified. Maybe? For reference, the things that were deleted included:
  • Paleozord
  • Mach Megazord
  • Gem and Gemma (later restored)
  • Tenaya's blaster (via Kilobyte at a terminal)
  • Grinders (via Dr. K's virus; not overtly described as a deletion, but same visual effect used)

Note that Venjix himself was not seen being deleted (he was crushed instead), though he had been accessing the bio-field beforehand [1].
[1] Danger and Destiny

Did Venjix survive inside the bio-field after his body was destroyed?

Perhaps; see "Venjix" for details.
[1] Danger and Destiny, part 2

Why did Dr. K take away the Rangers' Morphers in the finale? Weren't they still locked to their users?

...

What does the Samurai teamup tell us about the fate of the RPM powers?

Possibly little, insofar as we don't know whether the teamup crossed over with the same world seen in RPM, and even if it did, we don't know at what point in time it occurred relative to the events of RPM [1]. But the possibility does exist that teamup-Scott was in fact using his powers after the RPM finale.
[1] Clash of the Red Rangers

Was there an official spelling for "Turbo Axe?"

It didn't appear in writing.

Morpher uses

Notes regarding the tables below:
  • Sometimes instead of a morph sequence being shown, one or more Rangers would insta-morph while running after performing the usual preparations.
  • If an "(s)" designator is present, this means multiple morphs were shown in split-screen.

Morphs debut (Red = Scott, Yellow = Summer, Blue = Flynn, Black = Dillon, Green = Ziggy).
